Biomedical Autism Treatment – Autism, Constipation and Worms
Biomedical autism intervention – Chronic constipation that is not resolved easily can be a common problem in Autism. When remedies and laxatives don’t work, you may want to look into an underlying worm infection that could be contributing. Biomedical autism intervention specialist physician, Dr. Kurt Woeller, explains.
Chronic constipation is a topic I have spoken about many times in the past and it is something I seen commonly in my practice. And not only do children with Autism suffer from all of the digestive issues that are commonly recognized but there is also a regulatory issue involved. The nervous system’s input to give the sensation to have a bowel movement can also be compromised. There are various things you can do for constipation, magnesium, probiotics, vitamin C, and even laxatives can be helpful, even necessary for some chronic constipation. But something that often is unrecognized when discussing chronic constipation is an underlying worm infection. And it is something to consider when fiber, dietary intervention and supplements have not helped.
Vermox, or also known as Mebendazole, is a remedy that I have used very successfully for a worm infection. Vermox comes in a 100 mg chewable tablet and usually a dose of 1 tablet is sufficient to treat most pin worm infections. However, in the case of a persistent infection or when dealing with round worms, the dosing may need to be a little longer. In those cases I will dose Vermox 1 tablet twice a day for 3 days. Interestingly enough, this has worked very well for some children with Autism who also suffer from chronic constipation. If you use Vermox in this manner and it does resolve your child’s constipation then you know that a worm infection is contributing. And it can be very hard diagnostically to determine whether your child has a worm infection. It is not uncommon for a comprehensive digestive stool analysis to come back as not finding a worm.
When I have a patient who has chronic constipation that will not resolve using other remedies, I have used Vermox successfully. But what I do is I change the dosing a little. I will dose Vermox 1 chewable 100 mg tablet two times per day for 3 days. Then you take a break for 2 weeks. Then you repeat the dose of 1 tablet twice a day for 3 days. So the prescription would read Vermox, 100 mg chewable tablets, 1 tablet twice a day for 3 days. And you would have a refill on that prescription so after the 2 week break you could refill it and do it again. So if your child suffers from chronic constipation that will not resolve with the help of other remedies or laxatives, this may be something beneficial to discuss with your child’s doctor.
Autism Treatment – Biomedical treatments for adults with Autism
Autism treatment – Many adults with Autism face some of the same underlying health issues that children on the Autism spectrum face. When you address these issue biomedically, they also find relief and an increased level of functioning than they have previously. Biomedical autism treatment specialist physician, Dr. Kurt Woeller, explains.
I want to talk about an issue with respects to adults who have Autism. The issue is the word “cure” that has been thrown about for a number of years within the biomedical community. Not all doctors or individuals say that this is a goal or potential for Autism. But, it certainly has sparked controversy and even anger within the Autism community, and especially for adults who live with an Autism spectrum disorder.
I would like to make my perspective clear in that I have never used the word “cure” in my discussions of the biomedical treatments for those with Autism. I do see people with Autism “recover” from some of their underlying medical problems but often “cure” implies that the person has changed completely. So, I avoid using the word “cure” and I can see why some get frustrated or just completely disagree.
I believe that biomedicine entails much more than just simply giving certain medications, a diet, or administering supplements, it is fully understanding the clinical picture of a person. When you begin looking at issues like vitamin and amino acid deficiencies, dietary allergies, biochemical imbalances, digestive problems, or whatever may be an issue, improving those underlying health issues can many times improve the cognitive abilities of individuals with Autism whether they are children, teens or adults. This approach is focusing on optimizing the health and potential of an individual rather than a “cure”, which I think is a good approach. I believe that should be the focus of any health pursuit, we don’t want to change that person’s personality but rather we want to make sure their body is functioning better. We want to see the brain functioning better, the gut functioning better, the body functioning better, the immune system functioning better, the heart functioning better and the lungs functioning better.
For example, it is reality that many individuals with Autism have problems with their digestive tract. When you address those issues you may not have a total “recovery” but you will have a person who now feels better. If they have relief from digestive issues, they are digesting their food more effectively, they are having less bowel issues and they may be able to function better. When physical pain is gone, mental harmony and mental capacity will likely be improved, it is common sense.
So we can see how children are not the only ones suffering with some of these health issues, adults can too. I primarily see children in my practice but have treated adults as well for the same things. And I have seen adult patients who also have a child on the spectrum, then you really see how things go hand in hand. The focus is not on a “cure” but on the optimization of the person’s health and ability to function. This process helps them function to their highest potential, whatever that may be.
How to discover the side effects of extreme introvertedness in kids?
Symptoms of autism in children are normally identified at the age of three or earlier. Certain times, the indications of autism cannot be noticed by the parents when they are not clear.
Greater performed autism types such as asperger is one of the types which do not present signs which are very clear.
Except the autism signs are quite obvious. It does not matter about the type of autism the child contains, there are certain methods to notice symptoms of autism in children.
Parents must be knowledgeable about autism to understand how to treat it immediately.
Mostly the parents are the primary ones who find the indications of this problem, even though certain times, it may the physicians who found the symptoms prior the parents notice.
Signs of this problem can be viewed in advance at the age of one.
Signs:
- Kids with autism may present signs such as being slow in conveying something or not speaking etc.
- The children may avail continuous motions and play alone.
- They are sensitive to sound and touch.
- Any under or over excitement will activate a tantrum.
- They show a dislike for any little change and may simply create them cry.
- They seem ignorant to people and the surroundings around them also, always unaware about people and preventing eye contact with unfamiliar ones.
- They may be gradual in their movements. There are some methods of test when the kid is autistic.
- Hearing test has to be performed first to ensure that the kid is not speaking because of hearing issues.
- After this test, there is a genetic test to verify for the clarification for the delay in the kids development.
- The kid may also be examined for seizure disorders. After the test have been performed and offered the negative results, autism is identified by behaviours.
- The autism type can be diagnosed by a study of the kid’s behaviors, social patters and communication.
- This will assist to check whether the kid is low functioning or high functioning and the perfect treatment and care can be offered to the kid.
- Once the parents look any probable signs of autism in their kid, they must get it treated quickly.
Treatment:
- Diagnosing at the beginning stage can assist the kid receive treatment at the starting stage and progress the kids lift.
- Generally kids with autism are identified by the age of four.
- Even though there is proper cure for this disorder, an early diagnosis and treatment is good for both kids and parents.
- After the child is identified with the problem, parents must look for joining a support team.
- The autism society can assist find support teams local areas. Having a contact with other parents in the same condition can assist parents sense less alone as well as these groups can offer useful details.
- These communities can also suggest the good doctors, intervention programs and workshops for the family.
- Support communities for the kid and family will assist educate the family regarding autism and ca make a supporting atmosphere to property deal the kids illness.
- Identify the symptoms of autism in children in the early stage to proper treatment.
Autism Is Treatable and Even Recoverable
Autism treatment – There are many things to learn about biomedical treatments for Autism. As a parent, the key is to be informed and learn about some of the ways that Autism is being treated, and in many cases, reversed. Biomedical autism intervention specialist physician, Dr. Kurt Woeller, explains.
Everyday medical research is discovering more about the various influences that predispose a child to becoming afflicted with autism. There are excellent Autism treatments already available to help address the complex health issues facing children with autism. Unfortunately, the mainstream media, public viewpoint, and traditional medicine lag behind in talking about and referring these therapies to parents of autistic children.
The field of biomedicine – which views autism as medical condition involving the immune, digestive, metabolic, hormone and biochemical systems – has been alive and well for over 15 years, thanks to the help of such organizations as the Autism Research Institute and the Defeat Autism Now! organization of health care practitioners. Both of these groups have championed the treatment and assessment techniques necessary to address the medical complexities of autism, different from just the standard medical care of behavior therapy or suppressive drug treatment.
In short, the biomedical approach views autism as a multi-factorial medical disorder which adversely affects the brain (as opposed to the common traditional medical view point that autism is purely just a brain disorder). When these underlying medical conditions are treated many times the child’s autism condition either improves or goes away.
You, as a parent or caregiver, need to know that options exist, treatments are available, and there are things you can do right now to get going in helping your child. The most important thing is to develop an open mind, be committed to the process of biomedical intervention, and be willing to educate yourself. Knowledge is power, and when you become empowered with the tools necessary to help your child miracles can, have, and will happen.
My biomedical approach incorporates many different facets of medicine including diagnostic testing, dietary and lifestyle modifications, nutritional supplements, and certain medications (if needed). My approach comes from the knowledge that the majority of autism-spectrum children including children suffering with attention deficit (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other neuro-developmental problems are dealing with underlying biological and toxicity (i.e. chemical, heavy metal, food, infections) issues that are compromising their health.
In short, autism and its related spectrum disorders are more than just a psychological condition without hope for recovery or improvement. In fact, physicians utilizing a biomedical approach feel that the majority of children who are treated bio-medically through diet, supplements, detoxification therapies, etc. have a significant chance of improvement - if not a FULL RECOVERY.
My approach stems from a biomedical viewpoint. I feel the best chance a child has at "optimizing their full potential" is to incorporate biomedical therapies along with standard therapies such as behavioral, speech, auditory processing, occupational and more. This approach is too important to leave out of any child's treatment program no matter how old they are, or how long they have been diagnosed with ASD. A person’s health can always be improved.
To find out if biomedical therapies would help your child you need to be willing to implement some of them, and to learn how to do so. The amount of information related to the biomedical approach for autism can be overwhelming. Knowing what to do first, how to prioritize testing and therapies, dietary changes, what supplements to use, etc. leaves many parents feeling frustrated. This is understandable because much of the information that is available about biomedical therapies is not recognized by much of the medical community (but this is changing) and so most of the information needs to be obtained on your own from books, articles, support groups and the Internet.
This lack of information available through conventional medical channels does not mean the biomedical approach has no value. In fact, it is absolutely essential, but do not expect to get much recognition or support from closed-minded physicians or other health care providers when starting this type of autism treatment.
Autism Treatment – Is Autism Curable?
The word “cure” in regards to autism is a controversial term, and often brings up a heated debate about what this word really means for autism. But, what about the word “recover”. Does this have its play in the language of autism treatment?
“Autism is curable.” This is a statement some people use to indicate that autism is a disease or health condition that can be overcome. Others have vehemently argued that autism is not a disease process at all, and therefore there is nothing to be cured from. The traditional medical community viewpoint is that there is no cure for autism and only supportive treatment such behavioral modification and drug therapies are options worth pursuing.
To fully understand the concept of cure we need to make a distinction between what is commonly called ‘cured’ (a return to a previous state of health before a change had occurred) and ‘recovery’ (the act of regaining health that was previously lost). Traditional medicine, and even those in the autism medical community realize that there is no known cure for autism, although there are different treatments available including biomedical autism interventions that can help individuals on the autism-spectrum such as diet, i.e. gluten-free and casein-free diet and/or the specific carbohydrate diet, nutritional supplement intervention (including multivitamin/minerals), Methyl-B12 therapy, Respen-A, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, detoxification, anti-fungal treatment, and much more, as well as non-biomedical therapies including applied behavior analysis (ABA), speech and occupational intervention. Traditional medicine even has treatments which are mostly drugs such as Risperdal to suppress aberrant behavior. However, none of these treatments are curative.
I do not use the word ‘cure’ in my consultations, internet postings, lectures, or writings when discussing the various treatments available for individuals on the autism-spectrum. Instead, the more appropriate word I like to use is 'recover.' Here is an analogy. If you have an accident and break your arm, and overtime your broken arm heals to the point that movement is restored and it appears indistinguishable from before the accident this would indicate a recovery from your injury. However, your arm would still have suffered the injury and therefore an absolute cure from the accident (and subsequent broken arm) is not possible. You still had the broken arm. However, normal function in your arm has been regained…you recovered!
A similar concept applies to autism. Children (as well as teenagers or adults) are not cured from their autism. However, some individuals can recover, losing their diagnosis, and appear indistinguishable from their peers. In these cases their autism was reversed, most or all symptoms of their disorder have disappeared, and they now function typical of other peopleBusiness Management Articles, but they will always have had what is classified as autism. So what do you think? is autism curable?
Autism Treatment – Behavior change and Autism part 2 of 2
Autism Treatment – Behavioral changes in Autism can be complex and hard to understand. But certain things can impact a child either biomedically or emotionally and therefore result in behavioral changes. Biomedical autism intervention specialist physician, Dr. Kurt Woeller, explains.
This is part 2 of my 2 part series on behavioral changes in Autism and I will discuss other issues that can contribute. If you come to this page directly from search engine, please read the page one first here. When the behavior is occurring is something else to consider. Are the behaviors happening before school in the mornings or after school in the afternoon? Or does the behavioral issue happen during therapy sessions or while at school? Has their been a change that has occurred in your child’s daily routine? I often have children who’ve developed behavioral issues as a result of a new child entering their classroom and them not getting a long with the new child or there being some sort of conflict between them. This can also happen with a change in therapist or change in teacher as well.
Changes in their routine can result in behavioral issues. Have there been any dietary changes made recently? Either removing foods that your child likes or trying to introduce new foods can contribute to issues with behavior. Has there been a new supplement added? Behavioral changes as a result of a new supplement being added is something I commonly see in children with Autism. Adding supplements too quickly and not spacing them out every two or three days before adding in a new supplement is something that frequently happens. So behavioral problems can be frequently caused by supplements.
So it really does require you to be a detective to determine what is causing the behavior issues. And knowing how long the behavior has been occurring is important. Has the behavior been occurring over the past few days, over the past few weeks? It may be a situational problem rather than a biomedical one like I said before. It could be the result of a change in therapy or school, etc. So hopefully this provides you with some ideas to help you piece together what may be going on.
And if the issues are as a result of recently added supplements, what I suggest is to take a look at what has been added since the behavioral issues. And then I will usually recommend that you remove those supplements and see whether the behaviors disappear after three or four or five days. And then if you want to reintroduce them, you can do so but one at a time. You may even want to add them in at half doses and go slowly. And that may be just what your child needs to be able to tolerate the new supplement program you are trying to implement.
Autism Treatment – Spring Allergies, Regression and Autism, Part 1 of 2
Autism treatment – Springtime can mean yeast overgrowth for many children with Autism. Find out why this happens and what you can do to help curb this commonly seen problem. Biomedical autism intervention specialist physician, Dr. Kurt Woeller, explains.
With springtime comes yeast flares many times for children with Autism. When spring hits, it is interesting, that for many children who have yeast overgrowth issues, we see this pattern time and time again over many years in my practice. And this happens even when their yeast is well controlled using various medications or supplements. We see the regression that can come with yeast overgrowth and many of those odd behaviors like inappropriate laughter, goofiness, giddiness, silliness and self stimulatory behaviors that we associated with high levels of yeast in children with Autism.
Of course we want to understand why this may be going on. It can be a challenge to understand exactly what is happening but the theory is that with any sort of allergenic response in the body then you will also increase the immune activation to those allergenic triggers like grass or pollen or other allergens. And in children with yeast overgrowth issues, they already have a shift in the immune function due to the yeast and that can be systemic or it can be from localized reactions, like in the intestinal tract or the mucosal lining of the nose or sinuses. And those reactions still have systemic effects as well. The yeast takes advantage of the situation when there is a shift in immune function due to allergies. It takes this opportunity to begin to grow and when it does, the metabolic activity of the yeast is increased as it grows and as a result you see an increase in biotoxins. These biotoxins have negative effects on the child’s behaviors, this negative reaction is what we call regression and we see those behaviors we associate with yeast overgrowth all over again.
In order to combat this issue, the first thing to do is to be aware of it and know it is coming. If you live in an area of the country where it goes right from being cold to be warm again, watch for any behaviors you usually associate with yeast. Ensure too that when the weather begins to warm up and you begin to spend more time outside with family and friends, doing fun things like picnics or having people over to enjoy the weather, that you watch the consumption of sugary foods, sodas, juicesFeature Articles, etc. and for many kids that may need to be stopped in anticipation of the yeast flare. In the next article we will talk more about ways to address allergies and the yeast flares that come because of them. Please check the part 2 here.
